A Harvest of Tradition

Apple Production in Magnesia and Zagora

The region of Magnesia, particularly the mountain village of Zagora on Mount Pelion, is renowned for its exceptional apple production. Thanks to the area’s fertile soil, cool mountain climate, and abundant rainfall, Zagora has become a prime location for growing apples that are both flavorful and nutritious. The apples from this region, often labeled as “Zagorin,” have earned a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, highlighting their superior quality and unique characteristics.

Zagora’s apples are known for their crisp texture, juicy flesh, and balanced sweetness with a touch of acidity, making them ideal for both fresh consumption and use in various recipes. The village has a long-standing tradition of apple cultivation, with the cooperative of Zagora being one of the oldest in Greece, established in 1916. This cooperative ensures that local apple growers follow sustainable farming practices, ensuring the quality and authenticity of the fruit. The most prominent varieties grown in Zagora include Starking Delicious and Firikia, both prized for their exceptional taste and versatility. Apples from this region are not only a staple in local diets but also play a significant role in the economy, with annual harvest festivals celebrating this cherished fruit and its deep-rooted connection to the people of Magnesia.
