Heritage and Tradition in Winemaking Art
Tyrnavos, with its rich viticultural tradition, holds a prominent place in Greek winemaking. There is a Greek expression “όλα αμπέλια” (ola ampelia) -meaning “all vineyards”- that highlights the central importance of the vine in local culture and economy, as wine and tsipouro are integral parts of social events and customs in the region.
The Agricultural Wine Cooperative of Tyrnavos, with approximately 500 vine-grower members, has operated since 1961 in the production of wines, spirits, and beverages, distributing its products throughout almost all of Greece and abroad.
The wine of Tyrnavos is considered a “monument” of culture, with roots that stretch back through many generations. It embodies the art and labor of its inhabitants, while the yeasts used in its production serve as witnesses to its historical journey. According to the Larissa scholar Ioannis Oikonomou, the Tyrnavites (people of Tyrnavos) are cheerful and devout people, with wine consumption playing a crucial role in their lives.
Tyrnavos tsipouro, produced through the double distillation process, has gained fame beyond Greece’s borders. Today, both tsipouro and wine are not only products of the land but also carriers of cultural heritage, contributing to the identity of Tyrnavos.
