Easter in Greece

In Greece, Easter, or Pascha, is the most cherished religious holiday, beautifully intertwining solemn rituals and vibrant traditions. As Holy Week, or Megali Evdomada, unfolds, families prepare by intensifying their fasts, avoiding meat, dairy, and eggs. On Holy Thursday, children eagerly gather around as they dye eggs a vivid red, symbolizing Christ’s blood, while the aroma of freshly baked tsoureki, a sweet braided bread representing the Resurrection, fills the air.

The climax arrives on Holy Saturday with the stirring midnight vigil. As candles flicker to life, the chants of “Christos Anesti!” (Christ is Risen!) resonate through the church, igniting a shared sense of renewal among the faithful. After the vigil, families gather to break their fast with magiritsa, a traditional soup of lamb offal and herbs, marking the start of their celebration.

Easter Sunday bursts forth with jubilant festivities centered around a feast of roasted lamb or goat, a poignant reminder of the sacrificial lamb of God. Laughter and stories fill the air as families enjoy traditional dishes—kokoretsi, Greek salad, and sweet koulourakia cookies. The joyous atmosphere is heightened by tsougrisma, the playful game of egg tapping, where red eggs symbolize rebirth.

Beyond mere religious practice, Easter in Greece embodies family unity, heritage, and the simple joys of life. Whether in bustling cities or serene villages, the warmth of its traditions creates unforgettable memories, forging a deep sense of community and faith that lingers long after the celebrations conclude.
