Explore the Helmos Observatory and nearby natural wonders near Kalavryta

Located at an altitude of 2,340 meters on Mount Helmos near Kalavryta, the Helmos Observatory (also known as the Aristarchos Telescope) is a true gem for science and nature enthusiasts alike. It houses the largest telescope in the Balkans and offers one of the clearest night skies in Europe, ideal for astronomy lovers and astrophotographers. Operated by the National Observatory of Athens, it provides insights into the cosmos while offering panoramic views over the Peloponnesian mountainscape.

Visitors can reach the observatory via scenic trails that pass through the Chelmos-Vouraikos UNESCO Global Geopark, an area rich in biodiversity, rare geological formations, and alpine beauty. In winter, the region also hosts one of Greece’s most popular ski centers, making it a year-round destination for outdoor activities.

Just a short drive from the observatory, the peaceful village of Ano Vlasia hides another natural treasure: the Agioi Taxiarches waterfalls. Surrounded by plane trees and moss-covered rocks, these twin cascades create a serene setting, ideal for a quiet hike or a refreshing summer break. The crystal-clear waters originate from the Selinountas river and flow into hidden pools, adding to the fairy-tale atmosphere of the spot.

For those who enjoy more adventurous outings, the nearby Vouraikos Gorge offers impressive rock formations, small waterfalls, and hiking paths, including the historic rack railway line connecting Kalavryta with Diakopto.

Whether you’re exploring the stars at night or the waterfalls by day, the Kalavryta region promises a memorable blend of scientific discovery and natural beauty—perfect for lovers of nature, activities, and sports.
