Dionysus, the Return

ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΣ, Η ΕΠΙΣΤΡΟΦΗ

1 hour 35 minutes – 2020 – Documentary

For 35 years, since his first directorial performance of the “Bacchae”, Theodoros Terzopoulos is considered one of the theater’s great innovators, because of his radically groundbreaking scenic idiom.
The film follows Terzopoulos from the Greek village where he was born to a family of Greek refugees from the Black Sea, to the Berliner Ensemble, to Russia, China, the U.S., his theater base in Athens, and finally, to Delphi where it all begun.

REVIEWS

One last thing is… the greeting. This is how the man whose shocking portrait was my happiest premiere as a viewer at the online 22nd Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, Theodoros Terzopoulos, ends his wonderful speech in front of the lens.
But greeting might be the first thing in this comment of mine on a cinematic ergo- and personal story about which the only reproach a viewer can formulate is that it does not give him the right to formulate any.

I salute, therefore, with all the aesthetic emotion that the film gave me (but also the other emotion, the deeper one, that the dedication of the film to Loukia Rikakis gave me) one of the best written, directed, photographed and edited cinematic portraits that I’ve ever seen.

ALL the work of ONE filmmaker, who had the sensitivity and gift to so creatively weave his respect for personality and appreciation into his model’s work. The surrogate readings of the mother’s letters are of unparalleled scriptural ingenuity.
