The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is an art museum located in Massachusetts and ranks as the 20th largest globally in terms of public gallery space area measurement. It boasts a collection of 8,161 paintings and over 450,000 works of art spanning various genres and styles, making it one of the most extensive collections found in the Americas
The Art of Ancient Greece and Rome department features one of the world’s most recognized collections of classical art. With over 17,000 works, the collection spans from the Bronze Age (around 2800 BCE) to the Early Byzantine period (600 CE). These pieces were primarily created and used in the Mediterranean, but they can also be found in places as far as Afghanistan and Britain. The collection stands out for its quality and includes many unique and iconic works, particularly in Greek and Roman coins, gems, vases, and portraiture.
In the past ten years, nearly half of the classical galleries on the second floor of the George D. and Margo Behrakis Wing for Art of the Ancient World have been renovated. In late 2021, the MFA unveiled five newly designed galleries focusing on gods and goddesses, Byzantine art, early Greek art, Roman portraiture, and contemporary art related to ancient Greece and Rome. These galleries tell new stories using some of the oldest pieces in the Museum’s collection, connecting the art of the past to our present.
