Dancing Tooth

“Dancing Tooth” blends a variety of musical genres – afrobeat, hip-hop, rock, and soul. Featuring two vocalists, a brass duo (trumpet and saxophone), two drummers, guitar, and bass, Kapten unifies seemingly disparate styles into a cohesive and dynamic sound. The title of the track symbolizes the concept of impending change, and the fear associated with it.

Kapten

Established during the lockdown and consisting of some of the most accomplished musicians of their generation, Kapten is a band that made a name for itself via word of mouth, especially for presenting an unclassifiable musical fusion. Their sound integrates the exotic allure of Ethio jazz, reminiscing the sound of Mulatu Astatke and Mahmoud Ahmed, enriched with an outrageous blend of rock, soul and hip-hop, in a Parliament-Funkadelic/Miles Davis/Beastie Boys way, with jazzy horns, powerful drums, and dubby bass, in a varied and strong playing material.

Panagiotis Kapetanakis (trumpet) is the one who started the multi-membered project, alongside Alexandra Karampournioti, the voice of the band, Maquitto (bassist), who adds a dub-reggae aesthetic to the group’s sound, Thomas Kostoulas (drums), who’s also the drummer of the band M.A.T.E., Thanos Tsakiltsidis (sax) the youngest in the group, Grigoris Liolios (guitar), one of the newest members of the band, Alexis Makatselos (drums) and Nikos Tsop (vocals). All of them seem to bring their own influences and musical inclinations. There are also friends of the band who have played a pivotal role in the shape of this supergroup, such as Victor Tsilibaris (keys), Paschalis Ignatiadis, the band’s first drummer, Vaggelis Vrachnos, Panos Papazoglou, and others.

Never the kind to paint themselves into a creative corner and, instead, wanting to expand even further their musical vision, they collaborated with two world-known musicians, MC Myka9, who played an important role in the evolution of hip-hop, and Bert Van Den Brink, a legend of European jazz, in 2020 on their EP “Polarity”. The band has also released five singles, “Strange” (2021), “What You Get” (2022), “Take a Good Look” (2023), “Dancing Tooth” (2024) and “I Ηate Ιt” (2024).

Kapten are not content to rest on their laurels, and so they’re forged ahead. It’s hard to imagine that anyone with open ears can play their music and not get sucked into its glorious and colorful undertow of sound.
