How to Build a Choir – Mystery 96 Kores

ΚΟΡΕΣ, ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟ 96

20 minutes – 2019 – short documentary

Mystery_96 Kores is an educational and performing initiative with music at its core. It began with the creation of a choral ensemble composed of women from Elefsina and the surrounding areas. (Kores – Greek plural meaning “maidens”; singular: kore – is the term for a type of free-standing ancient Greek sculpture from the Archaic period, depicting young female figures).

Founded in October 2022 within the framework of Mystery 96_Kores of 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, the project focused on three main pillars: education, performance, and the building of a community of artists with broad artistic training.

Operating under the methodology developed for the CHÓRES group in Athens, Kores of Eleusis approached a diverse musical repertoire with a fresh and unconventional perspective — a hallmark of the ensemble’s steadily rising trajectory. Their work sheds new, unexpected light on traditional musical material, reinterpreting it in modern and innovative ways.

The documentary How to Build a Choir, directed by Giorgos Athanasiou, was released to mark the two-year anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the institution 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture.
