In Ancient Greece, archaeologists have found evidence of citizens voting their leaders out of office. Athenians cast ballots for politicians they thought threatened democracy and that they wished to see banished from their city for a period of 10 years. Representatives were held accountable for their performance and were punished for their mistakes in this way.
