Super Stereo
Hailing from the North and the city of Thessaloniki, Super Stereo emerged in early 00s as the alt rock post-punk brainchild of Thanasis Dzingovic (voice, guitar). After several changes in the line-up, with Dzingovic being the only original member, the band now consists of Eva Dourou (keys, theremin, voclas), Iasonas Oikonomou (bass), Labrini Grigoriadou (guitars), and Dimitris Oikonomou (drums).
The band pulls threads from 90s Brit aesthetics, Greek rock scene of that era (e.g. Trypes), 70s psychedelia and lo-fi, blending them all with Greek-speaking social criticism while trying to carve their own driving sound. In their 2007 official debut “Super Gomena”, their sophomore “To Teras” (the monster), and “3” – all released through Polytropon Records – they synthesized fringe and mainstream rock styles in clever ways to which they stayed true, expanding past the angst and dissonance often associated with rock n’ roll attitude to become more emotionally curious, and lyrically defined by irony.
Their 2024 album “San ta Gatia” (like cats), out via Fine! Records, is lively and direct; it highlights their interplay by pushing melodies and hooks to the forefront, leaving a sense of bittersweetness. And throughout it, Dzingovic ponders over human connections and vanished spaces, sentiments that could be read either as hopes or loses, or just meditations on a crazy, rough world.
