Monasticism constitutes one of the oldest institutions of the church, which has undergone many developments and changes in its organization over time, but essentially remains unchanged and is always characterized by clear orientation and purpose. In the 10th or 11th century, the first ascetics appeared in Meteora, who settled in the natural caves of the rocks and had rudimentary chapels for daily prayer. In the early 20th century, there was renewed interest in the monasteries of Meteora. The holy monasteries of Meteora, for six hundred years with their continuous presence and activity, have offered much and continue to offer until today, not only to Orthodox monasticism and our Church but also to the nation as a whole with their rich social work, their contribution to the preservation of our cultural tradition and heritage, and their interest in education.
