Nisyros’ Volcanic Magic

Where serenity and mystic aura blend with hospitality and artistry

There’s a little island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Dodecanese complex, that hosts one of the three active volcanoes in Greece: Nisyros Volcano. Its unique volcanic soil heritage deeply shapes the island’s atmosphere. One can wander through Nisyros’ main village, admire the breathtaking views, and enjoy some of the freshest local dishes imaginable.

This small, relatively untouristy island bears the influence of Italian architecture, as the Venetians once occupied it for many years. The houses typically have two floors, with the kitchen and living room on the ground floor and the bedrooms above. Locals gather in charming squares and enjoy Nisyros’ one-of-a-kind beaches, with black volcanic pebbles—such as Mandraki and Chochlaki. For those seeking an authentic, off-the-grid experience, Pachia Ammos beach offers the perfect escape into an alternative lifestyle.

The locals of Nisyros reflect the island’s unique character—calm, welcoming, and deeply rooted in tradition. Their hospitality feels effortless, whether you’re passing by a shaded square or being served a homemade dish. Many are artists themselves or closely connected to nature, adding to the island’s quiet charm and creative energy.

The island also features the Loutra thermal springs, a hidden gem for wellness seekers. These naturally heated waters have long been known for their healing (iamatic) properties, adding another layer to the island’s volcanic magic.

Interestingly, the Nisyros volcano, part of the Hellenic volcanic arc, is the only one in Greece that hasn’t disrupted local agriculture. On the contrary, the fertile volcanic soil allows for an abundance of trees and local goods to flourish. To truly experience this volcanic wonder, visitors can walk into the island’s central crater, known as Stefanos—a surreal, lunar-like landscape where you can literally stand inside an active (but dormant) volcano and feel the geothermal energy rising from the earth. (Don’t worry, the last notable hydrothermal events occurred in 1887, and minor seismic activity persists).

Greece has three active volcanic centers: Nisyros, Santorini, and Methana. Each offers a different expression of volcanic beauty, but Nisyros remains the most untouched, preserving its mystical and authentic charm.

The island’s quiet, almost mystic aura has long drawn the attention of artists and filmmakers. Many are inspired to create here, with several choosing to establish special festivals that take place annually.

Don’t miss the short film “Volcano”, hosted on our site and filmed entirely in Nisyros – a cinematic glimpse into the island’s raw beauty and atmosphere. Watch it here.

Also recommended: the internationally acclaimed feature film Window to the Sea, which captures the emotional depth and visual serenity of the island as part of its narrative.
