Dimitri Vassilakis presented the concept of Jazz Democracy at the United Nations, Trusteeship Chamber Hall in 2018. With an outstanding line up of international jazz musicians, personalities from the arts, science, and politics. The global event focused on how jazz and democracy are a music integration curriculum linking music and humanities. It coincided with International Jazz Day celebrations supported by UNESCO and April jazz appreciation month by the Smithsonian Institute. An important figure in the Greek jazz scene and an internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Dimitri Vassilakis has crossed the line into the free jazz arena, offering swirling free-form improvisations and outpouring spiritual emotion. The great tenor and soprano sax player is also a vocalist, composer, and educator with four award-winning albums via the legendary jazz label Candid Records, President of Jazz Democracy NPO, as well as founder and Director of Rhodes & South Aegean International Jazz Festival.
