Ladotyri Mytilinis

The Bold, Olive Oil-Aged Cheese of Lesvos

Ladotyri Mytilinis is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheese from Lesvos that stands out for its unique aging process in olive oil, which gives it a distinct spicy, tangy, and slightly salty flavor. This cheese is a true representation of Greek craftsmanship and regional identity.

Made primarily from sheep’s milk with up to 30% goat’s milk, Ladotyri Mytilinis has a rich, slightly sharp taste. Traditionally, it is stored in olive oil, which not only preserves it but enhances its spicy, buttery flavor profile. Aged for at least 3 months, the cheese develops a hard, crumbly texture, and its bold, peppery, and nutty taste makes it a favorite for cheese lovers.

Ladotyri Mytilinis is versatile in its use. It can be enjoyed plain, grilled (as saganaki), or paired with bread, honey, and ouzo.

For wine pairings, a bold Assyrtiko (dry white) or Xinomavro (light red) balances the salty, spicy notes, while Muscat of Limnos (sweet white) contrasts beautifully with its sharpness. For food pairings, try grilled Ladotyri with lemon and honey, fresh figs, or crusty bread and olives for a rustic snack. Cured meats like louza or prosciutto complement its rich flavor wonderfully.
