Traditional Non-Alcoholic Drinks of the North Aegean Islands
Wine and Ouzo are almost synonymous with the North Aegean islands but the prefecture is also home to a large variety of traditional non-alcoholic drinks that reflect the islands’ natural bounty and wellness-focused lifestyle. Herbal teas made from wild mountain herbs such as sage, chamomile, and dittany are staples, especially on Ikaria, which is known for its longevity. These infusions are often enjoyed daily for their soothing and medicinal properties.
Sour cherry juice (vissinada) and homemade lemonade are popular summer refreshments across the islands, often served diluted with cold water or soda. On Chios, locals produce rose petal and mastiha syrups, used to create fragrant drinks that are both refreshing and unique to the island. Quince, bergamot, and fig spoon sweets are sometimes offered in syrup form as a drink when mixed with water.
These beverages are part of the islands’ hospitality and seasonality, made from local ingredients and often homemade. They offer a flavorful glimpse into the region’s culture and care for natural living.
