Masticha Magic

Herbal Spirits from Western Macedonia

Masticha (or Mastika) is a unique herbal liqueur, popular in Western Macedonia, made from the resin of the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), which grows primarily in the Mediterranean region. The production process involves carefully collecting the resin, which is then distilled into a clear, aromatic spirit. The liqueur is infused with various herbs and spices, such as anise and sometimes cinnamon, giving it a distinct pine-like flavor that is both refreshing and bold. Known for its strong herbal character, Mastika is traditionally taken as a digestif, often served chilled or on the rocks to enhance its cooling effect and aroma.

While Masticha (or Mastika) is typically enjoyed neat, it can also be used creatively in cocktails. Its strong, herbal flavor pairs well with citrus fruits and fresh herbs, making it a great base for refreshing summer drinks. A popular cocktail variation is the Mastika Mojito, where Masticha (or Mastika) is substituted for rum, then mixed with fresh mint leaves, lime juice, soda water, and a touch of sugar. The result is a crisp and aromatic drink with a Mediterranean twist. Its versatility adds a unique dimension to classic cocktail recipes, bringing the distinct taste and spirit of Western Macedonia straight to the glass.
