Innovation and Tradition in the Wines of Goumenissa

The “Kilkis Wineries” initiative brings digital innovation to the wines of Goumenissa and the Paiko Hills, supporting local producers and showcasing the quality of the region’s grape varieties. Through QR codes on bottle labels, consumers can scan and instantly access information about the wine they purchase, such as its origin, grape varieties, and production method.

The Xinomavro and Negoska varieties form the foundation of the region’s PDO and PGI wines. Xinomavro has been cultivated since 1750 under the name “Popolka,” while Negoska is a native variety, primarily grown in the Kilkis area.

The platform was developed by the Regional Unit of Kilkis, in collaboration with local winemakers and the American Farm School (AFS), to boost the visibility and income of producers. Using sensors that record real-time conditions in the vineyards, producers can optimize their cultivation practices, resulting in wines with a smaller environmental footprint and superior quality.

This innovation enhances the reputation of Goumenissa wines, opening new avenues for exports to markets such as Europe and the USA.
