A 25-Year Legacy of Women’s Agrotourism
By Ioanna Foteinidi
The Women’s Agrotourism Cooperative of Trigono, Evros, known as “Gaia,” has been essential in promoting local agriculture for nearly 25 years (as of 2022). Founded in the village of Spilaio, where it is still based, Gaia is one of Greece’s oldest women’s cooperatives. It has effectively blended tradition with modern practices, helping the region’s economic and cultural growth.
Spilaio, part of the Municipality of Trigono along with 12 other villages, has been the cooperative’s home since its inception. Here, Gaia’s members create a variety of traditional products using locally sourced ingredients that showcase Evros’s rich agricultural heritage. Their offerings include handmade pastries, jams, and liquors, which are sold throughout Greece and internationally.
Gaia’s mission goes beyond just making products; it focuses on sustainability, supporting local farmers, and preserving traditional methods. This approach not only boosts the local economy but also celebrates the unique culture and flavors of the area.
Over the years, Gaia has become a symbol of female entrepreneurship and empowerment, showing how teamwork can drive social and economic progress while honoring local traditions. Its success story continues to inspire new generations in the region and beyond.
