Amorgos’ First Floating Canteen

Rock, Waves and Souvlaki

By Katerina Florous

Since 2018, Amorgos has been home to something you don’t quite expect to find in the Aegean: a floating canteen. Anchored just off the shore, it has been serving souvlaki and drinks to hungry swimmers, curious travelers and late afternoon wanderers.

It rocks in every sense of the word. Sometimes the waves give the place a little shake, sometimes it’s still as glass. Either way, the soundtrack is the same: Guns N’ Roses blasting through the speakers, turning every bite into a tiny rock concert on the sea.

What really sets it apart though is the man behind it. The owner, with his unmistakable style and easygoing presence, makes the spot feel less like a food stand and more like a piece of island culture. It’s not polished, not predictable, and that’s exactly the charm.

The floating canteen has grown into a small legend of Amorgos. Tourists and locals alike drop by for a souvlaki, a cold beer, and the chance to sit above the water while music and waves do their thing. It’s proof that sometimes the simplest ideas become the best memories.
